"Charlie's Place" is a limited edition print of an original artwork that was created for the exhibition "Art Is" in 2023. A photograph was chosen from a collection of Christian Flether images, and inspiration was taken and transformed into a unique art piece.

Blurb taken from artists statement:

"I was immediately drawn to the form of Christian’s aerial photo, and the colour was perfect for an underwater scene. I saw light rays coming through the water column from the top right corner, and the fingers of the creek were seaweed branches that could weave between several Gyotaku prints.

Gyotaku is a Japanese technique whereby ink is applied directly to a real fish, and then paper is manipulated on top to produce a unique nature print.

My subject is a Chinaman Rock Cod, affectionately known as the “Charlie Court”. Chosen for its stable scales and robust body, I could print from it multiple times, flip it over, and repeat the process (two fish were used for this piece).

To bring the composition together and flatten the Kozo, I bonded two layers of Kozo and a backing piece of Kitakata together using another Japanese process called Urauchi.

The multi-layered Urauchi is a process I use often, the prints and images on the second and third sheets drift through the sheer Kozo paper, creating a subtle greyscale and adding depth to the finished piece."

The limited edition will be printed onto Canson Edition Etching Rag and sent rolled securely, in a posting tube ready to frame to your liking.
